Final feedback from Simon

This is the feedback that Simon sent us about the final documentary video. It is very positive, there is only one negative comment, and this is something that we had already picked up on when editing the final video. I am very happy with the final feedback and am glad that he feels we succeeded in making the video.

Similar promotional videos and documentaries.

This is a short documentary, that is very different to the type of documentary that we made, what makes it different is not only the subject but the style of the documentary, there is a lot more camera movement in this documentary, as the people being being interviewed are talking the camera zooms in and out and all looks very free hand, which fits very well with the type of documentary it is, because it is mostly teenagers being interview and not very professional type answers, this definitely works well. Also this style of camera movement will attract it’s specific audience, teenagers, where as our documentary is about a college and college work, and it is meant for adults and education professionals. Although this documentary does have a lot of variety and that may have been good if used in ours, some shots are still, some aren’t, and some shot have the question being asked in the shot, this may have been interesting in our documentary as it would have given the audience a better idea of what the person being interviewed was being asked and explain more about what point we were trying to get across. The interviewer is also in some of the shots, I think it was a good idea that we did not use this technique in our video, as seeing the interviewer takes a lot of the focus away from the person being interviewed and the main point of the documentary is to focus on the people being interviewed and hearing there point of views. This video is not the same type of documentary as ours as this is not a documentary in order to promote an organization.

This video is similar to ours in the sense that they are both short documentaries that are made to briefly explain the workings and benefits of organizations. This video is also similar as they spilt the footage up with interviews of members of the organization with footage of the organization at work, with the interview footage linking with footage of what they are discussing. This also features text at the bottom of the screen explaining who the person talking is and how they are involved. The difference between this video and ours is that this video features very quick cuts and cuts between interviews a lot more, ours has only one person speaking at a time, where as this documentary has cuts from several interviews linked together. I think that the quick cuts and more variety of the order of interviews would have worked well in our documentary, because when the cuts are longer, the audience is likely to become bored of the same image being on screen of long periods of time, although our shots aren’t that long, I feel it may have been beneficial to experience with faster cuts.

This documentary is very different in the style that it is made, although it is also a promotional video promoting an organization. The main difference between this video and ours is the use of pictures as well as video footage, and also an introduction featuring a voice over, briefly explaining what the organization is, I think that although the pictures were not need in our video, it may have been very beneficial to include a voice and introduction as it gives the audience a clear idea from the beginning what the video is promoting and what the video will be about. Although this video does not feature interviews as our does, which means it needs the voice over to explain the video, which is what our interview try to do, but I think both are good ideas and it would have been interesting to try using both.

The Strawberry Fair Shorts

Strawberry Fair is a free volunteer run community music, entertainments, arts and crafts fair. The Fair takes place every year in the first week of June and is set in the heart of Cambridge on Midsummer Common.

The Strawberry Shorts Film Festival is the new incarnation of Strawberry Fairs own short film festival, which has run since 2001.

On the evening of 4th July 2008 over 1000 children, parents, teachers and invited guests met in the Cambridge Corn exchange for an Oscars‐style ceremony. The event was the culmination of the first Cambridgeshire Young People?s Film Competition organised by the Education ICT Service. A panel of professional film makers had judged the 80 submitted films from 27 Secondary, Primary, and Special Schools and individuals and selected winners in a range of categories and age ranges from 5 ‐ 19 years. The awards were sponsored and presented by a range of local and national businesses.

I feel this links with our project because of the link between making a film and working with the community, the strawberry fair work with the community to help people showcase there films, it give people an opportunity to do film making, like the Junction have given us this opportunity.
Also both our project and the strawberry fair shorts are in order to help young people work in the creative and media film industry.

What I have learnt from this project.

I have learnt a lot throughout this project, included editing techniques, and interview techniques but the main things are that I have learnt and gained experience of is what High Education will be like and what High Education students are like, I now know what kind of professionalism will be expected from me and university and in work. I have also learnt what kind of expectations universities and work places have for students and employers, this has given me a better idea of what will be expected of me in the future and throughout my career. I have also gained a lot about the pressure of working to a deadline and brief for a client, which is also a useful experience for future knowledge. All of these experiences and knowledge will benefit me with being more prepared for my future.

From pervious experiences I have learnt to work 'for' a client, understand a specific brief, although this has helped in understanding how it will work in the professional media industry. This has also taught me a lot about working 'with' an organization or client, this has help me learn what it is like to work in a collaboration, I will need this skill for any future collaborations with clients in my possible career in the professional media industry.

I have worked with many different clients, but this project has been a lot different from the others, I have worked with clients that set a clear brief, clients that let you have a lot creative influence, clients that put in a lot of feedback and other clients that I never received feedback from. Working with the Junction, I received a lot feedback and had a lot of meetings which helped in creating a product that is a collaboration of ideas from both myself, the group and the Junction. The main difference between this project and any other projects that I have been involved in is that this project was not a specific brief, it was influence by both us and the Junction.

Final changes to video

After the second rough cut, Philippa and Kirk are now going to edit the final video.
Their main intensions when editing the final video is to fix the problems such as; the music being to loud over the volume of the interviews.
They are also going to move the footage around more, so that simon and gary's interview are together instead of being far apart, because they are linked by the junction.
They are also going to mix the footage up so that it's not one person's interview then another, but the footage is more spread out.
These changes will definitely make the final video a lot better.
