Simon Feedback on basic idea - 19th Jan 2010

Simon really like all of mine and Philippa's ideas for the documentary.
He also gave us an idea of the different levels of people we should interview, he demonstrated this in a diagram of a pyramid.
This has given us a better idea of the different types of interviews we will need in our documentary.

Initial ideas for the Documentary - 19th Jan 2010

I worked with Philippa on coming up with some basic ideas for the documentary.
This our basic layout idea......

Intro?

L2 interviews about work with Junction/ possible split screen of Samba. Plus interview with Nick and possibly Simon.

Simon interview and L3 interview about work with Junction for Fiver promos, footage of the making of the promos.

L3 interviews about going to Bournemouth University and Under Graduate students from Bournemouth that are working with us + editing footage + Simon interview.

...Quick cuts, colour effects, split screens, not asking the interview questions on the video, possible music - but not take away from the contents of the video, names text for interviews - basic.

Getting into Groups and more about the project.

For the project we have broken into groups, two groups doing Promos and one group doing the documentary.
I am in the documentary group with; Kirk, Philippa, Mike, Dave, Matt H and Joe.

Our job as the documentary group is to create a skill-set video lasting approximately 6-10 minutes. Within these minutes we have to include interviews, footage of the fiver event, samba workshop, cutaways, and voice overs. Within these categories we will have to include interviews with staff at the Junction and staff at long road and Bournemouth. The main aim for this documentary is to show the link between how students from Long road CRaM course have been working alongside the Junction to create media products.

Simon talking to the class - 12th Jan 2010

Simon came to talk to us in class today and so I video taped the session with Simon for future reference...
This was our meeting with Simon.

Then sound quality is not very good.

Core Product / WOW Factor

Simon Bates explained an idea in a drawing for us showing the Core Product and the WOW Factor of our video, this picture shows that we need to focus on the Core Product then just add in a few WOW Factor's, but not to souly focus on the WOW Factor.

He demonstrated this idea with the hat he was wearing, it's core idea is to be a hat, that keeps a person's head warm, the WOW factor is that it looks good.

Difference between Commission & Interaction

There is a large difference between this interaction project and just a commissioned project.
In a commissioned project, it is just a project that follows a brief by the company, this project is a collaboration; a project showing the partnership between; Long Road, Bournemouth University and The Junction. We are working 'with' not 'for' The Junction.

I have done commissioned project before from clients; a reel for Tony Jones to be put in a shop window and a music video for a local singer Becky Young.
For these commissions I had to work to a specific brief and work to what the client wanted, whereas although for this project I am still working to a brief it is about the interaction between me and the Junction, we will have meetings to discuss ideas and will work together to produce the end product.

What the Project is

Our class has been asked to work with The Junction's Simon Bates to create promo's for the 'Fiver', band night event that The Junction hold every month. As well as that to create a documentary about the making of these videos, and all other interaction students from the Creative and Media diploma have with The Junction and Bournemouth University.

Junction's role in the community

A large part of choosing to work with the Junction compared to other organizations is that the Junction plays a very large role in the local community of cambridge...

The Junction has been an organization for 20 years and have been working as not only a venue for event but also as a provided space for the community to hire; the Junction is regularly used for community events such as...
- drama society theatre plays
- education workshops for young people
- the fiver event to help young musician play in front of audiences
- and they also have worked with the Creative and Media diploma on several occasions; letting us use there venue, stage and lighting for our music videos and the level 2 diploma students use their venue to put on a samba performance.

The Junction also help the creative and media diploma as part of the community because when we made a newspaper for a project, the Junction help us by advertising in our newspaper, which helped us in the funding of printing the newspaper.

Finding a Project and types of organizations

For this project we have to find an organization to do a project with. When finding a project, we were looking for organizations to make promotional piece of work with them we were looking for organizations such as; arts organisations, charities and public bodies, educational organizations and organizations that hold events.
We were looking for an organization that had a community presences and that did a lot to help the community.
When finding a project we found a possible 3 companies work with;

The first was a project wokring with the Cambridge Arts Picture House, we did work experience for them and they offered to work with us to make a promotional video for their website. This would mean a video about the picture house, and all of the events they hold there.

The second was a project was working with the Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, they want to work with us to take pictures for a poster to promo the hospital.
The project would be to make a poster to promote internships for students looking into medical careers.

The third is to make a promotional video with the Junction, for the Fiver event held at the Junction, and this would also involve making a documentary with SkillSet featuring the work we do in order to promote the creative and media diploma.

The Junction project is definitely the best one as it is not only a promotional video but a documentary as well. Also the Arts Picture House isn't the best idea because our work experience with them didn't go very well, and the Addenbrooke's project doesn't seem like a very good use and test of our skills, this is more of a project for Photography students, we are more skilled in work with promotional videos, like the Junction project. The Junction project is also a good idea for a project as not only is it a promo for their events but a documentary of our own work, which will mean analyzing our own work, also we have not yet done much work involving documentaries and promotional work so this will give a beneficial challenged and skills in areas of work that we have not yet come across.

PROs & CONs of organizations;
Addenbrooke's - working with a hospital is not the best idea for a project due to the size of the organization, it may be hard to keep in contact with them as everyone is really busy, and also when have meetings it may be an issue that the hospital regularly goes on lock-down due to out-brakes of virus'.

Film festival - working with the film festival is not right for us as we are looking to work with an organization that supports or has a lot of input with the local community.

The Junction - The junction is a good organization to work with as it has a large influence on the local community. Also out of working with the Junction, it is giving us the opportunity to work with Skillset on a different project.
